Meet Simeon! Simeon is a student at the New Scotland Elementary school. Last year he and his entire second grade class participated in a service learning program with students from the College of Saint Rose. This project allowed the children to see that college is a home away from home. When the students visited campus, they performed poems that they had written, as well as toured the campus.
The children also visited the Albany City Mission and the Ronald McDonald House. Prior to attending the Albany city Mission, the students collected twenty boxes to donate. While there they took a tour and were informed of the reasons people have to come to homeless shelters. While attending the Ronald McDonald house, the students were told the purpose of it, and why children have to go there. After the two trips, the students wrote poems and learned to express their feelings about their experience. They later preformed their poems in front of the class. The students then completed an art project where they were able to paint and use words to describe their feelings about the Albany City Mission, and the Ronald McDonald House. This experience was amazing for all of the students involved.
